Grant Wickland 5 String Black Walnut Banjo
Here is the full description for this beautifully crafted banjo, sent to us by Grant Wickland himself:
This is a hand built 26 3/16” scale clawhammer banjo with frailing scoop and mother of pearl dots, star at the 5th and side dots inlaid in an ebony fret board. The neck has a two way adjustment rod accessible from the heel.
The peg head is ebony with my trademark hand cut MOP “W”. The 1/4” stainless steel neck bolts are epoxied into threaded holes in the neck heel and fastened to the rim with a threaded solid brass rod and a locknut.
The bridge is compensated for intonation and is asymmetrical allowing the 5th string to hang out to the side of the scoop. This design comes to me from Chris Coole.
The tension ring is plated steel with steel hooks and nuts and my integral set screw tail piece .
The set screws are in drilled and tapped holes in the tension ring.
The strings are Sonny Osbourne medium lights and the entire instrument is glued wth waterproof Gorilla polyurethane glue.
The banjo head is an 11" synthetic high crown made by Elite.
The neck is pinstriped Padauk (vermillion) and the block rim is Pacific Yew with a bolting flange. Both have ebony caps.
The block rim has an integral Bolivian rosewood (Pau Ferro) tone ring.
This is a relatively light weight, mellow, hand crafted banjo made in my shop here on Salt Spring Island, B.C.
